Chinese Medicine for Stress, Sleep & Emotional Wellbeing
When It Becomes Difficult to Switch Off
You may be tired all day and then suddenly wide awake when you go to bed.
Or perhaps you fall asleep easily but wake at the same time every night. You may notice more vivid dreams, tension in your body, irritability, emotional sensitivity or difficulty concentrating when you have not slept well.
Sometimes the problem begins after a demanding period of life. Sometimes it develops gradually and becomes the new normal.
The important question is not simply “Are you stressed?”
It is:
How is that stress showing up in your body, your sleep and your everyday life?
A Whole-Person Approach
Good care starts with understanding the wider picture.
Digestive symptoms rarely exist in isolation. During your consultation, we look at your digestion alongside your health history, medications, sleep, energy, stress, lifestyle and any other symptoms that may be relevant.
This helps me understand the pattern as a whole and decide what may be appropriate for you — including what not to recommend.
How Traditional Chinese Medicine Looks at Stress & Sleep
Traditional Chinese Medicine does not consider every sleep problem or stress response to be the same.
The details matter.
During your consultation, we may look at:
difficulty falling asleep
waking during the night
early-morning waking
restless or light sleep
vivid dreams
whether you wake feeling refreshed
physical tension
irritability or feeling easily overwhelmed
fluctuations in energy
digestion during periods of stress
appetite changes
headaches or tension
menstrual or menopausal changes where relevant
how long the symptoms have been present
what seems to improve or worsen them
One person may struggle to sleep because they feel mentally overstimulated. Another may sleep for many hours yet still feel exhausted. Someone else may notice that emotional strain immediately affects digestion, headaches or muscle tension.
Those differences help shape the treatment approach.

When your mind is tired but your body cannot fully switch off
Stress does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it shows up as lying awake replaying the day, waking repeatedly through the night, feeling tense for no obvious reason, becoming more irritable than usual, or simply finding it harder to feel settled.
Sleep, digestion, energy and emotional wellbeing often influence one another. Your consultation gives us time to look at how these changes developed, what keeps them going, and what else is happening in your health at the same time.

Your First Consultation Includes
Understanding your sleep and stress pattern
We look at how easily you fall asleep, whether you wake during the night, how rested you feel in the morning, your stress levels and any physical symptoms that appear alongside them.
Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment
Chinese medicine considers sleep and emotional wellbeing in relation to the wider pattern of your health, including energy, digestion, temperature, hormonal changes and physical tension.
Personalised care plan
Your recommendations may include sleep routines, nutritional guidance, simple lifestyle changes, acupressure or Qigong techniques that are appropriate for your individual presentation.
Bespoke Chinese herbal prescription where appropriate
If herbal medicine is suitable for you, a formula can be prescribed according to your individual TCM pattern rather than simply choosing a generic “sleep” or “stress” formula.
