Renal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a common stress-related disorder in which the symptoms are strongly influenced by circulating cortisol levels. Living in a fast-paced society, our bodies tend to suffer the onslaught of stress from this constant go, go, go. When we don’t allow for time out, our physical body starts to be affected, leading to a weakened adrenal function. Because the adrenals lie directly above the kidneys, in a Chinese Medicine view, a depletion in this area can lead to a deficiency in Kidney Yin, Yang, and Jing. This is when symptoms of fatigue, such as low libido, cravings for salty or sweet foods, mild depression/anxiety, hair loss, insomnia, and feelings of apathy and “burn out” may appear. Treatment would include targeted acupuncture, herbal formulas that tonify Kidney Yin, Yang and Jing, and Qi and Blood, in addition to strengthening the Stomach and Spleen. These would include Ba Ji Tain (Tonify Yang), Da Zao (Tonify Qi), and Fi Ling (drains dampness to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach). Diet and lifestyle changes are also important. For instance, increasing fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, fish and fish oils, onions, garlic, olives, olive oil, herbs, spices, yogurt, fiber, and tofu or other soy products can help. Lifestyle changes include getting regular exercise and adequate rest, as well as taking a warm bath for about 20 minutes before bedtime. Adding regular gentle exercises to your routine like Tai Chi, walking, and Qi Gong can have great benefits.
